SYLLABUS:  THE OCEAN OF C

Preface
In the range and racing of coming up new developments of knowledge in educational and professional fields, we have made efforts to cope up with the latest academic environment. Thus, we have been updating our generations through the changed versions of our publications.
We have conceived a comprehensive studies on “C”, a specific general purpose programming language in our 5th edition. This gets the students in the world of structured programming.
Besides summing up the syllabus of all Indian universities, a complete knowledge is the base criterion of the book.
The whole book is organized into well-planned 20 chapters. The order of the chapters is a reflection of the degree of importance of the concepts of C from the viewpoint of learning them in a systematic manner. First few chapters introduce the fundamentals of C and the remaining chapters deal with the main concepts.

Chapter-1 discusses about the computer, its characteristics, generations and classification. This chapter also covers the components of a computer, logic development and problem solving techniques.

Chapter-2 introduces about the evolution and classification of Computer Programming Language. Here, various programming techniques like Algorithm, Flow chart, Decision Table and Execution Tables with examples, are also explained.

Chapter-3 evinces interest about C language in the minds of the readers by discussing the historical development need for the language and enumerating its salient features. Here, general structure of C programs, steps involved in executing them and various types of errors in a program are also discussed. This chapter also covers about the different platforms on which the execution of C program is done and system utilities like linker, loader, IDE etc.

Chapter-4 deals with the preliminaries of the language like character set, identifiers, keywords, data types, constants, variables and statements.

Chapter-5 throws light on the wide variety of operators and expressions, which are available in C. Each category of the operators is illustrated by means of a separate program. Topics like operator precedence, associativity and type conversion are discussed in detail.

Chapter-6 discusses about structure of C program, Pre-processor Directives, how input-output operations are performed in C. Various input-output functions like single character, formatted and string functions are also explained.

Chapter-7 deals with the programming logic, cohension and coupling, which are required for program development and decision making in C. It shows how conditional execution of statements is implemented with the use of “if and switch statement”. This chapter also defines the various jump statements like break, continue, goto etc.

Chapter-8 introduces loop control structures used in C. A number of problems which need repeated execution of statements are programmed here.

Chapter-9 presents the concept of functions in C. Types of functions are also described in detail. The concept of recursion is introduced and a number of programs are included to demonstrate the concept of functions. Here, the concept of storage class is also explained.

Chapter-10 presents preprocessor directives, another distinctive feature of C language. Here, topics like macros, file inclusion and conditional compilation directives are described.

Chapter-11 explores the concept of arrays. Here, the dimensionality of arrays, declaration and processing of arrays of different dimensions are discussed in depth. The

concept of searching and sorting are also discussed in this chapter. Moreover, this chapter introduce about bound checking, and implementation of different dimensional arrays in Memory.

Chapter-12 deals with the concept of strings. Here, various string manipulations, built-in functions to perform the manipulations, the working of the built-in functions (by simulating them) (Character Handling Function) are also discussed.

Chapter-13 presents the concept of pointers, the strength of C language. The advantages offered by pointers are mentioned in the beginning to highlight the significance of the concept. Declaration of pointer variables, pointer operators, pointer arithmetic are illustrated. The concept of dynamic memory allocation is described at the end of the chapter.

Chapter-14 is meant for dealing with the concept of structures, which enables C programmers to group the data items, which may be of different types logically. Structures in combination with arrays, functions, strings and pointers are also discussed. Other concepts like union, enumerated data type, type def of, bit fields are duly discussed.

Chapter-15 explains about streams, types of data files and file organization in C. Various operations over files like opening, closing, writing, appending, updating and so on are discussed. The file oriented built in functions, random accessing of files, error handling functions Low-level file I/O functions are also discussed. Here, the I/O redirection in Dos and command line arguments are also discussed.

Chapter-16 discusses about the concepts of graphics and the graphics functions used in C language with various example programs.

Chapter-17 discusses about Bitwise operators and masking with the help of which, operations can be performed on the bits. Moreover, working with ROM, BIOS Routines, DOS Routines, as well as TSR programs and Device Drivers in C are also discussed.

Chapter-18 introduces the miscellaneous programs.

Chapter-19 deals with the chapter-wise viva from 1 to 17 chapter. All the chapters are followed by relevant review questions and the chapters involving programs are provided with programming exercises.

Chapter-20 deals with the basic concepts of C++, which is considered to be one of the most powerful language today, similarities and differences between C and C++. Here, Friend Function and Streams in C++, are also discussed with proper examples.
